in brentwood, kron four news >> crime in the city of berkeley is up. according to the police chief. one crime rate category that has skyrocketed. is cases of rape. kron four's philippe djegal reports on the staggering year to year increase. >> reporter: in 2012. the berkeley police department says there were 39 reported rape cases. nine of those were attempted rapes. compared to 20 rapes in 2011. that's a 95-percent rise from year to year. investigations captain andy greenwood saying during a tuesday night crime report presentation to the city council. that the overwhelming majority of the rapes happened in the neighborhoods surrounding the u-c berkeley campus. where there is a dense student population. police say alcohol and or drugs were inolved in almost half of the cases. police say none of the attacks involved a stranger entering a home. and, only two involved a stranger on the street. police say the majority of the victims were raped by and acquaintance, friend, or people involved in past dating relationships. investigators here at the police department say there is no clear reason for

in north beach. along broadway. san francisco city officials are now reacting. to that fight over the weekend. kron 4 spoke with officials who say, operations at one club have now been suspended because of the fight. >> we have to make sure that the people that are profiting from these venues are more financially obligated. initially, after this fight broke out sunday morning, only two police officers could be seen. eventually police from the entire city embarked on broadway. to control the crowd. supervisor david chiu says, there had been signs of improvement in north beach. and some s-f-p-d officers had been re-assigned to other trouble spots mainly in the mission. he says he supports a slight increase in the property tax. among business owners in the broadway coridor. one that would pay for more security in the area. new at 11. a san francisco couple now behind bars-- accused of trafficking prostitutes out of a south san francisco motel. police say, sate jones and his girlfriend, maria jimenez, recruited four females-- including a 17- year-old. for prostitution. they were also

80 officers. kron four's philippe djegal explains why city officials say, they're having a tough time filling positions. the walnut creek police department website currently shows two full-time police officer positions are available. offering a salary range between 76 and 93-thousand dollars a year. might sound good. but police chief joel bryden tells the city council that might not be competitive enough. councilman justin wedel says potential candidates are force. instead, choosing other bay area police departments because othey officer a more competitive salary and benefits package. now, that the department is under-staffed. wedel says some detectives have been reassigned to patrol, putting some long- term investigations on hold. traffic cops have also been reassigned to patrol. as have the officers on the downtwon police task force, who monitor bars and crackdown on drunk drivers. councilman wedel says any and all options are on the table to attract more officers to the force. he says the city is putting potential candidates through two academies within the next six months. wedell

mountains. this is a view looking north across the area, big bear city sits here and just to the south of town is the bear mountain ski resort. now christopher dorner's burned out truck was found along a dirt road roughly a couple milesto the southwest of the ski area. this is a very remote pine trees and ravines. the terrain here is steep and rocky, also in the recent past there are have been forest fires in this area that have left a lot of debrie on the ground, that could make it tough for search teams on foot. also, there are apparently about 400 homes nearby. a lot of these residences are vacation homes and probably empty. search teams have been going door to door checking theses residences now, a command post has been set up in big bear city and swat team members have been carried via helicopter from a golf course to the area where dorner is believed to be hiding. now, one other curious thing, the video your watching is from kabc in los angeles and they spotted a fire burning about a mile away from the truck. we don't know if this has anything to do with the search for christophe

at the stick. kron 4's charles clifford has more... on the city's plans to demolish the stadium after the team moves south to its new home in santa clara. candlestick parks sits about 5 and a half miles south of downtown san francisco. the stadium was built in the late fifties as a home for the san francisco giants, the 49ers started using it in 1971. the giants moved out in 2000 and the next nfl season will be candlesticks last. for more than fifty years candlestick park has been home to sports, concerts, and more than a few memorable moments, among the highlights was the 1989 loma prieta earthquake, which shook the stadium on live television during the world series. there was also this pass from joe montana to dwight clark, which was immortalized as the catch that sent the 49ers to superbowl 16. candlestick park is currently run by the san francisco recreation and parks department, but after the 49ers play there last game here next season, developer lennar urban will take over. lennar is the same company that is redeveloping the nearby hunters point shipyard. under an agreement with the city

(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. actively searching the water for four people. including two children under the age of eight, believed to have abandoned their sailboat off pillar point drifting towards santa cruz. at around 4:30 this afternoon, the coast guard received a message saying that the boaters were having trouble with their communication system. at 5:30 the coast guard reports they lost all contact and sign of them. the sailboat has yet to be found. as of right now the coast guard is looking for 4 people.in the water. authorities say the boat had no life jackets or life rafts on board. we're joined now by th
